Location Guide: Where to Celebrate Independence Day

Mexican Independence Day is approaching, and it’s a holiday that we celebrate in full force here in the city. September 16th is the date, so set your calendars now.

While September 16, 1810 looked a lot different by way of Independence for the country (thank you Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla for your cry of independence), there are days of festivities to be had throughout Mexico now. We wanted to give you a preview of some of the events, so you can visit and celebrate with us, too!

Let’s start on September 15 at the National Place. If you’re into loud, symbolic sounds, this is the spot for you as the President rings the bell around 11PM, yells a Grito Mexicano and we all should Viva México together. The Zócalo gets packed around this time so arrive early and enthusiastic, because there will be flag waving, singing of the Mexican National Anthem, and a full military band.

From there, head to any number of bars and cantinas in the area to continue the festivities late into the evening (we recommend La Única de Motolinía, Salón Madrid, Salón España or El Tenampa), but gear up for more celebrations on the 16th, starting in the Zócalo, where there’s a military parade through the Paseo de la Reforma. It’s a national holiday so banks and businesses are closed, but you can find rodeos, parades, fireworks, dancing bullfights and other celebrations throughout the city.

Our suggestion is to start at city center (the Zócalo) and work your way partying around the city with natives and tourists alike. All are welcome as we celebrate the end of 300 years of colonial rule the day that Mexico earned its freedom.
